Weekend Treat: Chickpea Brownies

Sounds gross right? WRONG! This is awesomeness on a plate. Don't ask me how this turns out so yummy - it just does!

Discovery? Browsing for recipes with garbanzo beans, I found this base recipe at Group Recipes and then set out to make it decadent without being loaded with fat.

The result? Adjectives uttered that you want any good brownie description to include: moist, rich, chocolatey... See below and surprise your taste buds by making it!

My Garbanzo Bean Brownie Recipe

Brownie Ingredients:
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tin chickpeas
  • 4 tbsp cocoa
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1/2 tsp bicarb + 1/2 tsp creme of tartar
Method:
  • Zhoesh all ingredients in a blender/small food processor.
  • Bake at 175 degrees Celsius for 20 mins in a buttered square baking dish.

Icing:
  • Melt two tablespoons each of butter + milk + sugar on low heat till sugar is dissolved. Then stir in two tablespoons of cocoa powder.
  • Pour icing over brownies and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Born-up-a-gluten-free and have a grand weekend!

You know, I have a chocolate garbanzo bean cake recipe on my blog. It was one of my first recipes, but it uses a lot more sugar than yours. Next time I want to make this, I'm going to try your version.

garbanzo brownies, huh? That makes them healthy, right? So, you can eat these instead of a vegetable for dinner?

I tried them with tahini and loved them; this is such an interesting recipe, will have to try it soon, as I adore chick peas! (of course)

I'm going to be honest with you - it sounds weird. But I'm a sucker for the weird & wonderful, so I'll probably be trying this out sooner or later. :-) Will let you know how it goes.

Oh Juanita! These brownies sound BRILLIANT! I can hardly wait to try them! What FUN!

Quick questions: Did you drain your chickpeas first? And what size is a "tin?" (Here in Seattle, WA - USA; we have two sizes 8 or 16 ounces.)

Hi Lynn -

The chickpeas are drained first.

The Nett Mass is: 400g
The Drained Mass is: 240g = 8 ounces of chickpeas (minus their liquid).

Have fun! :-)

These brownies are wonderful!! I thought the recipe sounded a little weird at first (chickpeas in brownies???), but they are so tasty and so easy. I just took a pan of them out of the oven to take to work to share with my co-workers tomorrow.
